Triathlon and the Olympics
Triathlon was added to the Olympics at the 2000 Sydney Games. It was developed in the 1970s as an alternative to track training. The triathlon includes a 1,500 meter swim, a 40 kilometer bike race, and a 10 kilometer run.
At the 2012 London Games gold medals will be awarded in the men’s individual triathlon and women’s individual triathlon events, being held August 4 and August 7.
Triathlon at Michigan State
The NCAA does not recognize the triathlon as a competitive collegiate event, but MSU does have a club triathlon team that competes against other collegiate teams as part of the Mideast Collegiate Triathlon Conference. Local triathlon competitions are often held at the Lake Lansing or Hawk Island parks, but the team also trains in the MSU swimming facilities, MSU bike trails and on campus.
The team placed 13th of 50 teams at the 2012 Collegiate National Championship in Tuscaloosa, Alabama this April. The team competes in several different distance categories (including sprint, Olympic/intermediate, half ironman, and full ironman.) You can support the team on the MSU Giving website.
The team was kind enough to share some of their photos with us for this Beneath the Pines post. If you like what you see, check out their Flickr group.
